The Facts

How much does public liability insurance cost?
The cost of a public liability insurance policy depends mainly on what you do for a living and how much cover you need.
The cheapest liability policies are for trades or professions which do not involve any manual work.
A construction tradesman who does not use heat and are not involved with water or gas connections will pay a little more.
Plumbers, gas fitters, heating engineers and similar tradesmen using blowtorches and working with water and gas connections can expect to pay more still. The highest premiums are paid by tradespeople in higher risk trades involving work at height, welding, oxy-acetylene or other more hazardous activities; for example steel erectors, hot roofers and scaffolders.

How do I find the cheapest public liability insurance?
Well, that depends on how much time you have. You will probably find the cheapest premium by searching the internet and doing a few online quotes but you probably won’t find it very much cheaper than if you phone Onsite Insurance on 01902 678400. It will certainly be easier and you won’t be inundated by sales calls. You won’t have to listen to an automated call handler and recorded music. All our calls are answered by a real human being, Steve or Jenny.
We can usually give you a confirmed quote in less than 10 minutes. If you’re happy with the quote you can pay by card and we’ll post or email the policy to you, usually the same day. If you don’t want to go ahead we won’t phone you again unless you ask us to.
How much should I expect to pay for public liability insurance?
So that you can have a reasonable idea of how much we will quote I have listed estimated premiums for our most popular trades and professions for £1 million, £2 million and £5 million. I can’t list exact premiums because some insurers charge different premiums for different parts of the country and any insurance company may change its premiums today.
If you have at least 1 year’s experience
If you have incurred no claims or accidents which might have led to a claim.
If you have no criminal convictions and
If you have not been bankrupt
Then you can expect these estimated public liability premiums to be reliable for a self-employed construction or contracting professional.
